Alexander Skarsgård and Nicholas Braun Join Cast of ‘Documentary Now!’ Season 53

Alexander Skarsgård, Nicholas Braun, French actor Liliane Rovère and others have joined the cast for Season 53 of “Documentary Now!,” IFC announced Friday. The channel also released a first look teaser as well as final details for two new episodes to round out the season.

Known for paying homage to the world of documentaries, “Documentary Now!” Season 53 will debut with on Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 10 p.m. on IFC and on AMC+ the same day. New episodes will debut weekly on Wednesdays.

The two-part season premiere episode “Soldier of Illusion,” written by John Mulaney and starring Skarsgård, Braun and August Diehl, was inspired by the Werner Herzog-focused documentary “Burden of Dreams.” Set in the early 1980s, the episode follows a visionary German filmmaker (Skarsgård) as he tries to will his magnum opus into existence while working in the remote, punishing conditions of the Russian Ular mountains. Kevin Bishop, Gana Bayarsaikhan, Matthias Rimpler, and Fred Armisen will also star, with “Documentary Now!” ensemble alumni Deb Hiett returning as narrator.

“Trouver Frisson,” which pays tribute to the films of Agnes Varda, stars Rovère and Ronald Guttman. Inspired by Varda’s “Gleaners and I” and “Beaches of Agnes,” the episode features Rovère as a celebrated French filmmaker named Ida Leos as she searches for why she no longer experiences “frisson” – the goosebumps that have always been her guide. Written by series producers Matt Pacult and Tamsin Rawady and co-directed by Micah Gardner, the episode also stars “Documentary Now!” alumni Gary Kraus.

The two newly announced installments join previously announced episodes “Two Hairdressers in Bagglyport,” “How They Threw Rocks” and “My Monkey Grifter.” The upcoming season of the acclaimed comedy — co-created by Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and Rhys Thomas — is executive produced by Lorne Michaels and produced by Broadway Video.

Videos: Why Alexander Skarsgård Had To Be Amleth In The Northman

Videos: Why Alexander Skarsgård Had To Be Amleth In The Northman

Screen Rant has an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip from the home release of Viking epic The Northman, starring Alexander Skarsgård.

Screen Rant is excited to exclusively present a behind-the-scenes clip from The Northman, which is seeing its digital release today before hitting shelves via the 4K Ultra HD Collector’s Edition, Blu-ray Collector’s Edition and DVD on June 7. The highly-acclaimed Focus Features production was directed by Robert Eggers (who previously made a name for himself with The Witch and The Lighthouse), as well as co-written by Eggers and Icelandic novelist Sjón.

Based on the Danish folktale that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet, The Northman follows the tragic story of Prince Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård, Godzilla Vs. Kong) and the bloody revenge he seeks against his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang). After witnessing the murder of his father (Ethan Hawke) and kidnapping of his mother (Nicole Kidman), young Amleth (played by Oscar Novak) swears a vengeance that takes him years to finally complete.

Though The Northman opens with Amleth as a child, the film takes viewers through his transformation into a Viking berserker – and thus his transformation into Alexander Skarsgård – before he can see his mission through. In Screen Rant’s exclusive clip, Eggers shares that he strongly felt no actor but Skarsgård could take on the difficult role of Amleth. As fate would have it, the actor himself was also very interested in putting together a Viking film because he’d never seen a similar epic made. You can watch the exclusive Northman clip below:

In the full clip, Skarsgård explains how the light and exuberant innocence leave Amleth’s eyes as a youth and soon turn him into the hard and hateful antihero that thirsts for blood and will stop at nothing until he defeats Fjölnir. This is, of course, despite the fact that his uncle has already been disgraced and finds himself living in exile before Amleth ever steps in his path again.

Eggers describes Amleth as a protagonist from an Icelandic family saga, whose outlaw status slots very easily into that role. Without a doubt, Skarsgård was the perfect choice to play the grown-up version of the character, and he gave his all to bring such a complicated and fascinating story to life.

‘The Tiger’: Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi To Direct Alexander Skarsgard & Dane DeHaan In Feature Take Of John Vaillant Book

‘The Tiger’: Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi To Direct Alexander Skarsgard & Dane DeHaan In Feature Take Of John Vaillant Book

Ukrainian filmmaker Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi wrote and will direct the feature adaptation of John Valliant’s book The Tiger, in which Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award-winner Alexander Skarsgard will star alongside Oppenheimer actor Dane DeHaan.

Set in snowy far east Russia in the late 90s, the feature follows a group of men — referred to as the Tiger Team — who work to protect endangered tigers from poachers and logging operations. The story follows Vanzin (Skarsgard), the Team’s leader whose sense of duty is tested when he’s charged with hunting down and exterminating a tiger that killed a poacher in self-defense. DeHaan would portray Kanchuga, a young environmental scientist and newest member of the Team.

Darren Aronofsky and Protozoa are producing, along with Plan B and Wild Bunch International. The Veterans will launch sales on the project at the Cannes Film Festival. CAA Media Finance is co-representing domestic rights.

“I am so excited to make this film, and am overwhelmed with admiration towards the team that has rallied behind it. I’ve worked on the story of The Tiger for a very long time, and the chance to see it realized is a dream come true. Darren is a producer of singular taste and talent, and Alexander and Dane are once-in-a-lifetime stars. I can’t imagine a better or more brilliant group of people as collaborators,” said Slaboshpytskyi.

Said Aronofsky, “As a producer, I’ve wanted to do two things for a while now: one is to make this film, and the other is to work with the brilliant auteur that is Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi. I am truly excited to be involved with a project that will allow me to do both, and cannot wait to bring this story to the world.”

“We are very excited to work on the Tiger with our friends at Protozoa after our successful experiences with The Wrestler and Jackie. This project is the perfect cocktail of everything we believe in: a young talented director, a great production team, a strong cast, an impacting content at the service of a very original screenplay full of action, adventure and humanity,” said Wild Bunch’s Vincent Maraval.
